The battle for Congress remains close, but our latest national survey contains a clear warning for Republicans: Democrats continue to lead on the generic congressional ballot, while the Republican advantage on the capitalism-versus-socialism question has narrowed sharply.
The race for Congress remains competitive in this survey, but the trend lines contain a warning for Republicans. Democrats lead the generic congressional ballot 48%–43%. The Republican-associated free-market position still leads the Democratic-associated big-government socialist position, 45%–41%, but that 13-point July advantage has collapsed to four points.
Republicans remain strongest among men, married voters, voters over 55, conservatives and 2024 Trump voters. But those constituencies alone may not be sufficient to overcome Democratic advantages among women, younger voters, singles, non-white voters, and independents. Independents are nearly divided when presented with the economic choice: 38% choose capitalism and 36% socialism. But when asked simply to choose between the parties for Congress, they favor Democrats by a striking 47% to 28%.
That leaves the central question of the closing weeks of the congressional campaign: Can Republicans improve voters’ views of their party by changing perceptions of the economy and the cost of living — or will dissatisfaction with the country’s direction overwhelm the economic argument? The answer could help determine control of Congress.
