The Justice Department (DOJ) is preparing an unprecedented election-monitoring effort for the November midterms, with trained government lawyers expected to observe voting across the country. The Justice Department is preparing to deploy roughly 1,000 monitors nationwide, with the number potentially growing before Election Day.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said that “it’s going to be lawyers who are trained in how to properly monitor and analyze what’s happening and then just taking notes so that Justice Department can deal with it afterwards. We’re not there to run the election, interfere with it, but we are there to document anything that goes wrong and maybe take legal action afterwards”. Dhillon also confirmed that the Justice Department has notified all 50 states that knowingly allowing noncitizens to vote in federal elections is illegal.
